Max De Cuyper
Brighton & Hove Albion have bolstered their left-back options with the signing of Max De Cuyper, a player whose journey from attacker to defender could prove advantageous in the Premier League. De Cuyper’s transition from a forward to a full-back during his formative years at Club Brugge has equipped him with an attacking prowess that complements his defensive duties. As he integrates into Brighton’s squad, De Cuyper reflects on his development and the expectations set by manager Fabian Hurzeler and his coaching staff.
Max De Cuyper said: “No, when I played in the academy, I was an attacker. Then, when I was 14 or 15, they said to me I have to learn to defend. So they pulled me one row down as a full-back. I think they want a little bit like versatility. For several youth players, they try to do it. And that’s what they tried with me, so it was a good decision.”
De Cuyper added: “For sure, to be positionally wise, to be shorter when the ball is played to the winger, be ready for the deep ball in the box, box defending, be ready for the cross, stuff like that. It feels like there is more flexibility.”
De Cuyper’s versatility is a trait that Brighton values highly, as evidenced by their tactical flexibility under different formations. His ability to adapt to various systems, such as the 4-2-3-1 and 3-5-2 formations he played at Club Brugge, aligns with the dynamic approach of Premier League football. The coaching staff at Brighton, led by Hurzeler, have emphasized the importance of positional awareness and defensive readiness, areas where De Cuyper continues to refine his skills.
Max De Cuyper said: “I played actually two systems. There was 4-2-3 and a 3-5-2 or a 3-4-3. But I think today in football, if you started with four in the back, you can be ten minutes later with three at the back. It changes so quickly because we don’t have like the type of shape that will be for 90 minutes long.”
De Cuyper’s arrival at Brighton was marked by discussions with Hurzeler that provided him with insight into the club’s ethos and playing style. His visit to the club’s facilities reinforced his decision to join, as he felt an immediate connection with the environment and the people involved.
Max De Cuyper said: “I came the first day to visit the club, I felt it straight away. Of course, I cannot know if I’m from a distance from the club. I cannot know how it works there. That’s why it was important to visit the club. To see some people, talk with the coach. That he’s looking forward to meeting me on the pitch, stuff like that.”
As De Cuyper continues to integrate into Brighton’s squad, his adaptability and attacking instincts will be crucial in the Premier League’s demanding environment. The club’s focus on player development and tactical flexibility positions De Cuyper as a valuable asset for the upcoming season.
