Rayan Aït-Nouri
Manchester City’s recent acquisition of a left-back this summer is set to have significant implications for players who previously filled that role. Josko Gvardiol is expected to return to his preferred position in the center of defense, potentially forming a formidable partnership with Ruben Dias. Meanwhile, Nico O’Reilly, who emerged as a versatile option at left-back last season, faces uncertainty regarding his playing position for the upcoming season.
Pep Guardiola said: “His position is – I’m pretty sure – attacking midfielder and every cross he is on the penalty spot. That’s what I like as an attacking midfielder. I’m pretty sure [he is a midfielder], otherwise he doesn’t score the goals like he has scored so far. He likes to be there, he has a good shot and quality in small spaces and it’s helping us.”
Nico O’Reilly said: “I had to get used to the defending side as well because being in the back line was not something I was used to. As it has gone on, I have learnt a lot and still have got a lot to learn as well. I have enjoyed it and it’s good to have a bit of versatility. Obviously with my size and my physicality, to get up and down the wing, it does suit me. I think the way we have been playing tactically has benefited me in that way, to get in those positions.”
The signing of Rayan Ait-Nouri may reduce O’Reilly’s minutes at left-back, but it could also open opportunities for him in his natural attacking midfield position. O’Reilly, who is known for his goal-scoring ability from midfield, netted five times from the left-back position last season, showcasing his knack for making timely runs into central areas.
The challenge for O’Reilly, a Manchester-born academy graduate, is to secure a spot in a competitive midfield. With Bernardo Silva now the club captain and Phil Foden eager to reclaim his role following an impressive performance in America, competition is fierce. Additionally, new signing Rayan Cherki presents another option for Pep Guardiola in the attacking midfield role.
As Manchester City prepares for the new season, the tactical adjustments and player rotations will be crucial in maintaining their competitive edge. The versatility of players like O’Reilly provides Guardiola with valuable options, ensuring depth and flexibility within the squad.
