Giorgi Mamardashvili
Giorgi Mamardashvili made his debut for Liverpool in their pre-season 3-1 friendly win against Preston North End, marking the beginning of his journey with the Reds. The 24-year-old Georgian international joined Liverpool after a £29 million transfer from Valencia, a move finalized last August. While Alisson Becker has been Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper since his arrival from Roma seven years ago, Mamardashvili is determined to make his mark and learn from the best.
Mamardashvili said: “What I can tell about Ali, he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world right now and I am so happy to work with him. I can’t wait to start to work (with) him and learn from him. I like challenges and I’m here to just give my best and help the team.”
Mamardashvili added: “I am happy, I am very excited to be here. I feel ready, motivated and proud. When I agreed (to) Liverpool’s offer last summer, I felt that something big was beginning in my life. I watched all the games (on television last season) with a different feeling, like I was already part of the team. But now I truly understand what it means to be Liverpool’s player.”
Mamardashvili continued: “When I was a child I always watched some videos on YouTube of goalkeepers, and I remember some Liverpool goalkeepers as well. I remember Jerzy Dudek and then Pepe Reina and now Alisson Becker. Liverpool has a big goalkeeper legacy and I want to try to write my own chapter in this goalkeepers’ legacy.”
Mamardashvili’s arrival at Liverpool comes with high expectations, as he aims to contribute to the club’s rich history of exceptional goalkeepers. His previous experience at Valencia, where he worked with former Liverpool goalkeeping coach Jose Manuel Ochotorena, has prepared him for this significant step in his career. Ochotorena, who was instrumental in Mamardashvili’s decision to join Liverpool, encouraged him to seize the opportunity to play for such a prestigious club.
Mamardashvili said: “Ochotorena is an amazing person and an amazing coach. Actually, he was one of the first who I talked (to) about Liverpool’s offer and he directly told me ‘just sign the contract’ because he knows how big (a) club Liverpool is, and I just want to tell him thank you.”
Mamardashvili is not only focused on his individual growth but also on becoming part of Liverpool’s close-knit team environment. He expressed admiration for the club’s family-like atmosphere, highlighting the support and camaraderie among players and staff. As he embarks on this new chapter, Mamardashvili is determined to contribute to Liverpool’s success and uphold the club’s esteemed goalkeeping tradition.
