Sunderland AFC has hit the ground running in the transfer window, securing six new signings ahead of their pre-season trip to Portugal. The Black Cats kicked off their pre-season with a commanding 4-0 victory over South Shields, although only Habib Diarra was able to make his debut. With several defensive injuries, many fringe players from last season were given the opportunity to participate. Head coach Régis Le Bris is using the initial two weeks of pre-season to assess the fitness and potential contributions of his squad, but he has made it clear that decisions will be made post-Portugal.
Régis Le Bris said: “We’ll see for every player. I told them that the first two weeks we are dedicated to [their] connection. After that we’ll have to be clear. Some of them need game time but if it’s not possible for the squad in the Premier League it’s not necessary to stay here. We’ll decide early.”
The future of Nectar Triantis, who returned from a successful loan spell at Hibernian, is one of the key considerations for Sunderland. The Scottish club is interested in re-signing the 22-year-old, but Triantis is eager to explore his prospects at Sunderland first.
Le Bris said: “For Nectar, he had a good season last season. He played well on loan. It’s the same for everyone, let’s use these two first weeks to understand where they are exactly. Then we will decide for everyone.”
In addition, Le Bris has confirmed that several senior players who participated in the 2-2 draw against Gateshead at Hebburn Town are likely to leave the club this summer. Joe Anderson, Ian Poveda, Nazariy Rusyn, Abdoullah Ba, Jay Matete, and Luis Hemir were among those who played in the match, which predominantly featured development players.
Le Bris said: “Yes, absolutely [they can leave]. We split the squad with the players who really need to find game time. For the others, it’s fair to say we need to assess their level right now, assess the squad and see after that.”
Le Bris’s approach reflects a strategic focus on building a squad capable of competing effectively in the Premier League. By providing opportunities for players to prove themselves during pre-season, he aims to ensure that only those who can contribute meaningfully will remain. The upcoming trip to Portugal will be crucial in determining the final squad composition, as the club seeks to balance new signings with existing talent.
