John Aldridge, a Liverpool legend and current chairman of the club’s official association, Forever Reds, was visibly emotional as he paid tribute to a former player who tragically passed away. The former striker was among those who traveled to Gondomar, Spain, to attend the funeral of the player, alongside many from the Liverpool squad. The player’s untimely death has left a profound impact on the club and its supporters.
Aldridge said: “It is (devastation), yeah, it is. I’m still numb. You just can’t get your head around the enormity of what’s happened. From the former players, we’re absolutely smashed. We just can’t believe what’s happened to one of our players, who is a hero in many ways. Even us, we looked up to the team. The manner in which he passed away, you’re looking at his three kids, his wife, his mum and dad, it just rips your heart apart.”
Aldridge continued: “It happened after Hillsborough. The pitch was a sea of red, if you remember, with flowers from all the other clubs as well. That was so poignant, so special under the circumstances. Phwoar. And that’s what supporters do, don’t they? It shows you, doesn’t it?”
Aldridge added: “You look at the future, more for his family at the moment. And what the lads are going through. My heart goes out to the lads, wow. When they get together, it is going to be a massive shock for all of them and I’m sure they will move on in time. But for the present moment in time, it is going to be really tough for them. He spoke so highly of Liverpool and his love of the city. The one thing that over the last three or four days… he has got a fantastic song that they sung, but you can’t get it out of your head. Yeah, (his song will still be sung many times), absolutely, yeah. 100% (his memory will live on), 100%.”
The tragic event has drawn parallels to the Hillsborough disaster, a poignant moment in Liverpool’s history, which Aldridge also referenced. The former player’s passing has united the club and its supporters in grief, as they remember his contributions both on and off the field. The player’s legacy is expected to endure, with his song continuing to be sung by fans, ensuring his memory remains alive within the Liverpool community.
