Shaun Wright-Phillips, the former Manchester City and Chelsea winger, is reportedly on the brink of financial distress following actions taken by the tax authority. Known for his role as a club ambassador for Manchester City since 2020, Wright-Phillips’ financial issues have come to light through legal documents listing him under his full name, Shaun Cameron Wright-Phillips. Despite his ambassadorial duties, which recently took him to Atlanta, the ex-footballer faces a challenging financial situation.
A spokesperson for Wright-Phillips told Telegraph Sport: “Shaun is not aware of this and matters are already with his accountant who is fully versed in Shaun’s affairs. He is currently out of the country and the matter will be strenuously contested on his return.”
During his recent trip to Atlanta, Wright-Phillips was fulfilling his ambassadorial responsibilities for Manchester City. He witnessed the team’s impressive 6-0 victory over Al Ain at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium as part of the Club World Cup festivities. Alongside fellow City ambassador and former teammate Joleon Lescott, Wright-Phillips participated in a Young Leaders Summit, which included a cultural exploration of Atlanta.
Despite his notable achievements on the field, Wright-Phillips has faced significant challenges in his business ventures. His Mayfair-based luxury handbag shop, Maison d’IF, launched in July 2020, struggled financially and eventually folded. The business reported net liabilities exceeding £200,000 for the financial year ending June 30, 2022. This is not the first instance of business difficulties for Wright-Phillips, as one of his ventures was shut down by court order as early as 2013.
Wright-Phillips joins a growing list of former footballers facing financial difficulties post-retirement. The situation highlights the broader issue of financial management among athletes, with many struggling to maintain stability after their sporting careers. As Wright-Phillips continues his role as a coach for Jamaica’s national team, the financial challenges he faces serve as a cautionary tale for current and future athletes.
