Damien Duff has resigned as the manager of Shelbourne FC after a challenging season that saw the team fall significantly behind in the League of Ireland standings. Despite leading Shelbourne to their first league title in 18 years last season, Duff’s side struggled this term, trailing 15 points behind leaders Shamrock Rovers after 22 matches. The decision follows a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Derry City, marking their sixth loss of the campaign.
Damien Duff said: “This (the League of Ireland) is your bread and butter. They (Shelbourne’s players) are in Europe, in the Champions League, because of the league. I asked them before the game, I said it’s 18 days until the Champions League, and I said if they’d have a Champions League mentality, motivation, energy here. I’d say pub teams have better motivation, energy, quality than us. Damning words, but I’m correct in saying them.”
The Mirror reported: “Damien informed the club this morning that, after much thought, he has made the decision to resign. He shared the news with the players earlier today. While all at Shelbourne FC are deeply saddened by Damien’s decision, we fully respect that he feels this is the right choice for him at this time.”
Duff’s departure comes amid speculation about his potential future roles, including rumors linking him to the Republic of Ireland managerial position and interest from a ‘big club’ in England, which he reportedly declined earlier this year. His blunt assessment of Shelbourne’s performance against Derry City highlighted his dissatisfaction with the team’s current state, comparing their effort and quality unfavorably to that of a ‘pub team.’
Joey O’Brien, the former West Ham defender, has been appointed as the caretaker manager for Shelbourne’s upcoming match against Waterford. The club expressed gratitude for Duff’s contributions, emphasizing the strong foundation he helped build during his tenure. As Shelbourne looks to the future, they aim to build on the successes achieved under Duff’s leadership, despite the current setbacks.
