Andy Carroll, the renowned English striker, has decided to leave Bordeaux, a club in the French fourth tier, to return home and be closer to his family. Carroll, who initially made headlines with his £35 million move from Newcastle United to Liverpool in 2011, had rejoined Newcastle in 2019 before moving to Bordeaux from Amiens last summer.
Bordeaux said: “On the pitch, the English striker scored 11 goals in 21 league matches. But beyond the statistics, Andy brought his experience, physical impact, and professionalism to his role on a daily basis, both in the locker room and during important matches. Off the pitch, he is an exceptional and generous personality that the Club’s fans and employees have enjoyed working alongside. Today, to be closer to his children, Andy has chosen to return home. We fully understand and respect this personal decision. Thanks for everything, Andy. You’ll always be home here. Safe travels and see you soon!”
During his tenure at Bordeaux, Carroll contributed significantly with 11 goals in 21 league appearances, showcasing his prowess and experience. However, his impact extended beyond the pitch, as he was appreciated for his professionalism and positive influence within the club. Bordeaux, a club with a rich history that includes six Ligue 1 titles, has faced financial difficulties in recent times, which has seen them relegated to the fourth tier of French football.
Carroll’s decision to leave Bordeaux was influenced by personal reasons, as he expressed a desire to be closer to his children. In an interview with L’Equipe, Carroll revealed the financial challenges he faced during his time in France, stating that his salary was insufficient to cover his rent. Despite receiving offers from clubs in Saudi Arabia, Carroll remained committed to playing in Europe, expressing a desire to continue his career until the age of 40.
Andy Carroll said: “My salary is lower than the rent I pay. If I joined Bordeaux, it’s not for money. I’ve had proposals to play in Saudi Arabia but I was not interested… I’d love to continue playing every Saturday at least until I’m 40, whatever the level. It would be wonderful to experience that, in Bordeaux or elsewhere.”
Carroll’s departure from Bordeaux marks another chapter in his storied career, as he seeks to balance his professional ambitions with personal commitments. His time at Bordeaux, albeit short, was marked by significant contributions both on and off the field, leaving a lasting impression on the club and its supporters.
