Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola recently disclosed that veteran defender Kyle Walker expressed a desire to leave the Etihad Stadium in January, seeking opportunities abroad. This revelation came after Walker was omitted from the squad that secured an emphatic 8-0 victory over Salford City in the FA Cup third round.
Pep Guardiola said: “Two days ago Kyle asked to explore the options to play abroad. He asked [too] after the treble [in 2023] – Bayern [Munich] wanted him but the offer was not good enough. We cannot understand the club’s success over the past years without Kyle. It’s impossible.”
Guardiola continued: “He went to Txiki. I left him out for that reason. I prefer to play other players whose mind is here. Maybe I’m wrong but I still am pretty convinced that there’s no one in our job that [can play their best] if they don’t want to be here – can’t perform. Maybe I’m not right. I respect him a lot because I’m more than grateful for what he has done for us since he has been here many years.”
He added: “He’s been important [too] for the national team. He said: ‘I want to explore, my mind and my heart [says this].’ But I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Walker, who made his request to City’s sporting director Txiki Begiristain, has been a pivotal figure at Manchester City, contributing significantly to their recent successes. Despite his desire to explore new opportunities, Guardiola emphasized Walker’s irreplaceable role and the potential impact of his departure.
Reports have emerged linking Walker with a move to Everton, although the interest is described as tentative. Walker’s brief loan spell with AC Milan saw him make 11 appearances in Serie A, adding to his total of 16 games for the Italian club. This stint followed an initial interest from Bayern Munich, which did not materialize due to an unsatisfactory offer.
Guardiola highlighted Walker’s growing maturity both on and off the pitch, acknowledging the player’s influence within the team. The manager expressed relief that Walker remained with the club, citing his importance and unique qualities as irreplaceable.
As the situation unfolds, Walker’s future remains uncertain, with potential suitors monitoring his status closely. His contributions to Manchester City and the England national team underscore his value, making any potential transfer a significant development in the football world.
