Strasbourg president Marc Keller has expressed his views on the future of Djordje Petrovic, who spent last season on loan from Chelsea at the Ligue 1 club. Despite Petrovic’s impressive performances, Keller does not foresee a return to Strasbourg for the Serbian goalkeeper during this summer transfer window. Petrovic, who was a key figure in Strasbourg’s qualification for the Conference League, is seen by Keller as having the potential to play for a Champions League or Europa League club next season.
Marc Keller said: “We need a goalkeeper because Petrovic has left for Chelsea. I don’t think he’ll return to Strasbourg simply because he’s an incredibly good player. I think he can probably aim for a Champions League or Europa League club, at Chelsea or elsewhere if he were to leave Chelsea.”
Petrovic’s tenure at Strasbourg was marked by his consistent performances, where he kept ten clean sheets, a record only surpassed by Brice Samba and Lucas Chevalier in the league. His contributions were instrumental in the club’s successful campaign, which saw them secure a spot in the Conference League. Keller’s comments highlight the goalkeeper’s rising stock and suggest that his future lies at a higher level of competition, potentially with Chelsea or another top European club.
Additionally, Keller mentioned Kendry Paez, a young talent who trained with Strasbourg and is set to join Chelsea next summer. The teenager left a “strong impression” during his time with the club, drawing comparisons to Andrey Santos and Petrovic, who also had successful stints at Strasbourg.
Marc Keller said: “He’s a young player and these training sessions in Strasbourg allow him to see a little bit of the conditions we have. And it’s true that the examples of Andrey Santos and Petrovic give ideas to the players because you see them happy and having a great season.”
The possibility of a loan move for Paez was also touched upon by Keller, who described the Ecuadorian as “an extremely talented young player who has impressed everyone.” While a loan deal is deemed “possible,” Keller indicated that a decision has yet to be finalized.
This development in Petrovic’s career underscores the competitive nature of goalkeeper positions at top clubs, where performances can quickly elevate a player’s prospects. As the transfer window progresses, it remains to be seen where Petrovic will ply his trade next season, but his trajectory suggests a promising future at the highest levels of European football.
