Sunderland
Sunderland AFC is preparing for a pivotal summer as they aim to bolster their squad for the upcoming Premier League season. With a significant task ahead in terms of squad depth and quality, Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman is also focusing on securing the futures of key players from last season’s squad. This strategic move is crucial as Sunderland looks to establish themselves in the top tier of English football.
Kristjaan Speakman said: “We do a contract review right across the group at the end of every season. I think we’re in a strong position with the majority of the group this time around, especially with a lot of the players who have performed at a really high level. That’s part of trying to build the squad for next season. We don’t have anyone out of contract this summer and so that means there isn’t an immediate issue for us, we have a little bit of time to reflect. As I always say, it’s got to be the right opportunity for the players and for us.”
The contract situation for several players is under review, with Dan Neil and Dennis Cirkin being top priorities. Neil, the club captain, has just one year left on his current contract and has attracted interest from top-tier clubs, including AS Roma. Although discussions for an extension were paused last year, Sunderland’s promotion strengthens their position in negotiations. Cirkin, another key player, also has one year remaining on his contract. His commitment to the club’s rise from League One makes him a vital asset for the upcoming season.
Trai Hume and Chris Rigg, both with two years left on their contracts, are also expected to receive new offers. Hume has become a staple in the starting lineup, while Rigg has made significant strides as a senior player, drawing interest from clubs across Europe. Sunderland aims to reward their progress and secure their long-term future at the club.
Eliezer Mayenda and Romaine Mundle, each with three years left on their deals, are not under immediate contract pressure. However, Sunderland is keen to acknowledge their rapid development over the past year. Mayenda, in particular, has emerged as one of the most promising young strikers, with interest from top European clubs. Despite this, he has expressed his happiness at Sunderland, indicating a willingness to continue his journey with the Black Cats.
While Luke O’Nien and Patrick Roberts are entering the final year of their contracts, the club holds options to extend these deals, alleviating immediate concerns. Niall Huggins, also in the last year of his contract, is focused on recovering from a significant injury before any long-term decisions are made.
