Roman Abramovich, the former owner of Chelsea Football Club, reportedly distanced himself from football following his forced departure from the club. The Russian billionaire, who transformed Chelsea into a powerhouse since acquiring it in 2003, sold his shares to Todd Boehly and Clearlake for £2.5 billion in May 2022. This decision came after the British government revoked his ‘golden visa’ in 2018, a move that left Abramovich feeling aggrieved.
Abramovich’s close associates revealed that he has rarely watched a football match since relinquishing control of Chelsea. A source mentioned, via The Sun, that Abramovich maintained his interest in football but refrained from attending games, as his attachment was primarily to Chelsea.
A source said, “Roman still likes football. But he doesn’t go to games any more. It was always about Chelsea.”
Fans may soon gain more insight into Abramovich’s perspective through his first series of interviews since 2021, featured in the upcoming book “Sanctioned: The Inside Story of the Sale of Chelsea FC.” These interviews, conducted in Abu Dhabi and Istanbul, delve into his feelings about the sale.
Former Chelsea player John Obi Mikel, who played during Abramovich’s ownership, shared insights into the Russian’s ongoing resentment over the sale.
John Obi Mikel said, “I still speak to people close to him and it still pains him. He’s still angry about what happened. He’s not happy that he lost his ‘baby’ because Chelsea Football Club was his football club. He really cared about the football club, not just the players but the fans.”
Upon selling the club, Abramovich emphasized his commitment to Chelsea’s best interests.
Abramovich stated, “As I have stated before, I have always taken decisions with the club’s best interest at heart. In the current situation, I have therefore taken the decision to sell the club, as I believe this is in the best interest of the club, the fans, the employees, as well as the club’s sponsors and partners.”
During Abramovich’s 19-year tenure, Chelsea secured an impressive 21 major titles, including five Premier League championships, five FA Cups, two Champions League crowns, and two Europa League titles. His legacy at Chelsea remains etched in the club’s history.
