Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed after a challenging season that saw them collect only 10 points in 31 games. As the first team to be relegated this season, the Saints are now focused on avoiding a record-low points total. Interim manager Simon Rusk is tasked with steering the club through the final matches with dignity and purpose.
Jan Bednarek, who has captained the team this season, emphasized the importance of enjoying their remaining Premier League fixtures while preparing for a fresh start in the Championship.
Jan Bednarek said: “It was just a matter of time. Next season we will be in the Championship and it is the beginning of something new. We have to build something good around the club. We can’t change the past; the only thing we can do in the last seven games is to enjoy being in the Premier League. We have to improve as players and as a club. Hopefully, we are going to build something great. The best thing is that we can learn, we can work hard, and we can improve. Hopefully, we can perform better in the last seven games. We want to get more points, I don’t think 10 is enough. Hopefully, we will get more points.”
Despite the setback, Bednarek committed his future to Southampton by signing a new contract that keeps him at the club until 2027. This decision came after he turned down a potential move to Rome during the winter transfer window. His commitment signals a desire to be part of the club’s rebuilding process and to contribute to its future success.
Southampton’s focus now shifts to the upcoming Championship season, where they aim to regroup and strategize for a swift return to the Premier League. The club’s management and players are determined to use the remaining games as an opportunity to improve and gather momentum for the challenges ahead.
