Liverpool slumped to an almost unprecedented fourth successive league defeat at the hands of Glenn Hoddles’ rejuvenated Chelsea side. The defeat meant that the Blues were on a seven-match unbeaten run which was in stark contrast to Graeme Souness’ men who had just won once in six matches.
It was the 18-year-old Chelsea youngster Neil Shipperley who deepened the gloom surrounding Anfield with a great goal and sparkling performance. And the mistake came from Liverpool’s goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar who had failed to grab the ball cleanly and the referee judged that the ball had crossed the ball before the Zimbabwean cleared the shot.
Liverpool had plenty of possession but couldn’t convert it into a goal and the frustration boiled over in the end with three players from the visitors’ side getting yellow cards.
