Ossie Ardiles was poised to dive back into the transfer market to strengthen his injury-hit defence. The Tottenham manager had lined up a replacement for right-back Dean Austin, who was out for 10 weeks after breaking his leg against Oldham a week earlier. Seventeen-year-old Steve Carr was given his debut in last night’s goalless coca-cola cup game at Burnley.

Ossie Ardiles said “He’s had only one game in the reserves, so to play him here shows how highly we rate him. I thought he did splendidly. But I still hope something will happen in terms of an incoming transfer before the weekend.”
