Newcastle United’s striker, Aleksander Isak, was in top form ahead of the team’s trip to Arsenal for the Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday. Isak had scored in his last seven games, marking a red-hot goalscoring streak. His 13th goal of the season, scored against Tottenham Hotspur, placed him fourth in Newcastle’s Premier League all-time top scorers, trailing behind Alan Shearer, Callum Wilson, and Peter Beardsley. Newcastle had acquired Isak in a £63million deal three years ago, a move that now seems like a bargain. Despite interest from other clubs, Newcastle had no plans to sell Isak during the transfer window.
Paul Merson, a football pundit, had suggested that Arsenal should try to sign Isak.
Paul Merson said “Arsenal should try and sign Isak this month.”
However, a £150m deal would be illogical at this point in the season. Instead, Newcastle was relying on Isak to continue his goalscoring streak and help them secure a European finish this season. Before that, they were set to face Arsenal in a two-legged semi-final, hoping to end a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.
Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, was asked about Isak in his post-match media briefing.
Mikel Arteta said “He’s a top player, he’s in top form scoring a lot of goals.”
Despite a growing injury list, it was unclear whether Arsenal would look to strengthen their squad during the transfer window.
Mikel Arteta said “What happens in the market, we are very alert. It’s not a yes, it’s not a no.”
