Sean Dyche, the manager of Everton, discussed Iliman Ndiaye’s position in the team amid ongoing debates about playing him in his natural role as a number 10. There was pressure and continuous discussions on moving Ndiaye from wide positions to a central attacking role, especially after similar issues at his previous club, Marseille. Despite the call for positioning Ndiaye centrally, Dyche was initially hesitant and expressed skepticism regarding the necessity and evidence of this move.
Sean Dyche said “People keep telling me I should be playing him in the Number 10 [position] but there’s no evidence to suggest that he should be playing as a Number 10. People keep telling me my role as a manager, as they do.”
Following his earlier statements, Sean Dyche began to adjust his perspective on Ndiaye’s position gradually. During a match against Brentford, Dyche started experimenting by using Ndiaye in a central role. This experimentation continued, reflecting Dyche’s evolving approach to the team’s tactics and positioning of players, attempting to balance between Ndiaye’s fit and the team’s overall effectiveness on match day.
Sean Dyche said “I think he can adapt to play there but the modern Number 10, you have to defend from there as well. You see Dwight McNeil doing very well on the defensive side.”
