Unai Emery cites Matty Cash and Morgan Rodgers injury for Aston Villa’s 4-1 defeat at Tottenham

Aston Villa faced a challenging encounter against Tottenham in the capital, resulting in a 4-1 defeat. Despite the scoreline, Villa’s manager, Unai Emery, addressed the nature of the defeat and shared his insights on the game dynamics.

Aston Villa took the lead in the 32nd minute when Morgan Rogers capitalized on defensive indecision from a Lucas Digne corner. However, Tottenham responded strongly in the second half. Brennan Johnson’s equalizer shortly after the restart shifted the momentum. Dominic Solanke’s quick brace put Spurs in a commanding position, and James Maddison sealed the victory with a late free-kick in added time.

Unai Emery said, “It was a difficult moment for us. We had to try and do something. Even at 2-1, I was trying to plan something different, but it was very tight. After the [injury] problem with Matty Cash and the kick Morgan Rodgers had … those players were very consistent in the level we needed. After those necessary changes, the team was different. We have to try to get different options with the players, even tactically like with two strikers. We have to continue in our way in different practice we are doing because we will need to get different tactical situations sometimes, and of course, getting the best out of the players. We won two times here and we knew how to win here but they are a good team. We are disappointed, frustrated but we are accepting it. We know our way, it is 38 matches, the league is very tight.”
