Sean Dyche has confirmed that Dwight McNeil is a doubt for the upcoming clash with Southampton, although he remains hopeful about McNeil’s potential involvement. On the other hand, James Garner is facing more significant time away from the field, with the manager indicating Garner could be sidelined for over a month due to his injury issues.
During a press conference on Thursday, Sean Dyche provided updates on the condition of several players ahead of the Southampton match. Everton’s Dwight McNeil, who had to be substituted late in their game against Fulham—where they managed to secure a 1-1 draw thanks to a late goal by Beto—might still be able to feature this weekend.
Sean Dyche said, “Dwight has got a chance. We’re hopeful. He’s done a bit of work with the physio team today so we’re hopeful on him. Doucoure as well had a situation but he has been out on the grass today. So we’ll see how that reacts today.”
Regarding James Garner, Dyche shared some disappointing news, noting that Garner is dealing with a longer-term back injury.
Sean Dyche said, “He’s been very unlucky. Unfortunately he’s got a longer-term injury. We mentioned last week about getting an assessment from the specialist and were advised [to have] a period to slow him down again, take him off the grass. It’s going to be weeks. It’s not going to be days that’s for sure.”
In addition to McNeil and Garner, Everton will also be without Armando Broja, Tim Iroegbunam, and Youssef Chermiti, who are all dealing with long-term injuries. Despite these setbacks, Everton is currently on a five-game unbeaten streak and hopes to extend this run against the newly-promoted Southampton, who have struggled, securing just one point from nine games since returning to the Premier League.
