After a disappointing loss to West Ham, Manchester United parted ways with Ten Hag on Monday and are now actively seeking his full-time replacement. In the interim, Ten Hag’s former deputy, Ruud van Nistelrooy, is expected to step in. While Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim has emerged as the likely replacement, Dwight Yorke, a former United forward, isn’t sold on that option.
Dwight Yorke said, “What I’m about to say might baffle the football world, but if it was me, I would go and get Unai Emery from Villa. He’s the guy that United needs right now. That’s been well documented. He’s definitely in the elite managers category. He is the man that I would go out and do everything to try and get. Since he went to Villa, he’s been a tremendous success. He’s turned Villa into a really top club in the toughest league in the world, got them punching above their weight consistently. He’s turned Villa into a team that can beat anyone. Nobody expects an easy ride against Villa. If he brings his energy, his philosophy, to Man United, I think it’s the perfect fit.”
At 52, Emery’s contract with Aston Villa has just under five years left. Having managed Arsenal before, the Midlands outfit marks his second tenure in the Premier League. His time at Arsenal concluded in November 2019 when he departed from the Emirates Stadium after succeeding Arsene Wenger and leading the team for 18 months.
