Erik ten Hag declined to single out Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot despite his missed opportunity during their defeat at West Ham. Dalot had a chance to score after running onto Bruno Fernandes’s pass, getting past goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, but he ended up sending the ball high and wide from 10 yards out while the game was still goalless. This miss was indicative of United’s ineffective first-half performance. Alejandro Garnacho hit the crossbar and missed from a one-on-one, Bruno Fernandes skied a free header, Marcus Rashford squandered a promising chance, and Rasmus Hojlund was denied by Fabianski.
Erik ten Hag said, “No, there were so many who missed chances. And I believe in my players, that they are capable of doing this. So yeah, I trust them and I will encourage them to keep going and do the same things we did over long periods in this game and other games because finally we will go and net and kill and win more games. What my players do always and what I do always: first we look in the mirror. What did we do wrong? And the only thing I can criticise the players for is the missed chances. It was the main factor. But, then of course, it’s clear and obvious – the decision-making by the referee today had a big impact on the score of the game.”
