During the 2022/23 season, two players, Martinez and de Gea, were part of United. Martinez joined from Ajax, while de Gea left Old Trafford after his contract ended. Martinez faced challenges in his second season due to injuries and fitness issues. Despite these challenges, the Argentine helped United win the FA Cup in June. He was a starter in United’s first six Premier League matches of the current season until he was benched for the match against Aston Villa before the international break.
United’s season began poorly, with just three wins in their first 10 matches. Although victories against Southampton and Barnsley lifted the team’s spirits, United has not secured a win in their subsequent five games. A recent goalless draw against Aston Villa highlighted some positives, according to Ten Hag.
Erik Ten Hag said, “This is our fourth clean sheet of this season and that tells something about the control we have in and out of possession, we are organised very well. In many games so far we create loads of chances – today we didn’t create that much, but we had the chances, with Rashford before half-time and after half-time. We had a free-kick from Bruno on the crossbar. And then also we have to see that in the end, when we defend like we did today, very solid, that you also have some luck in the end. They created probably the best [chance] of game, [with] the deflected shot and the block from Diogo.”
