Angel Gomes made his debut for Manchester United in 2018, becoming the youngest player to represent the club since Duncan Edwards in 1953. His potential was highlighted once again during the England U21s European Championship triumph in 2023, where he was a key performer. Recently, Gareth Southgate’s departure from the England national team has presented new opportunities for Gomes, who earned his first senior cap under interim manager Lee Carsley.
With his contract approaching its final months, there is increasing interest from clubs in his signature. While Manchester United is reported to be one of those keen on signing him, Gomes is also considering his options, particularly as he will be able to negotiate with non-French clubs in January for a potential free transfer in the summer. However, Lille may push for a transfer in January if a new contract agreement isn’t reached.
Angel Gomes said, “United are claimed to be among those clubs reportedly keen on signing him next summer and the Old Trafford academy graduate says it would always be hard to say no to a return to Manchester. I do sometimes think about where I would be now [if I’d stayed at United]. As amazing as it would be, after finding happiness abroad I know [playing in the Premier League] is not the be-all and end-all. There’ll always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course it’d be difficult to say no.”
