Arsenal has demonstrated remarkable skill in scoring from dead-ball situations under the management of Mikel Arteta. Last season, they equaled the Premier League record by scoring 16 goals from corners, and they continue to be a formidable threat in such scenarios this year. On the other hand, Southampton, known as the Saints, have shown vulnerability in defending against these set pieces, which is a concern as they prepare to face Arsenal in London.
Russell Martin addressed this challenge as he shared his thoughts on preparing his team for the encounter:
Russell Martin said, “We got undone by a quick one which is a bit of a different scenario (against Bournemouth). We have a group of people that are working very hard on analysing that and trying to negate that in the best way we possibly can.”
He emphasized the importance of his players being prepared to defend against set pieces effectively:
Russell Martin continued, “The players are really aware and if we give away some corners and free kicks we have to be ready to stand up to it and defend it properly. That’s the same at any level but especially against a team with some players who attack the ball so well. They are really consistent with it.”
Highlighting Arsenal’s strength in set-piece situations, Martin praised their mentality and skill:
Russell Martin stated, “It’s their mentality that makes them such a threat, nothing else. The quality of delivery but their mentality to actually go and put their head on it and score is incredible.”
