Mikel Arteta Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has made it clear that Thomas Partey remains a key player for Arsenal despite lingering uncertainties about his future. Although the Ghanaian international’s contract is set to expire next summer, and there were expectations that he might leave before the 2024/25 season, Partey stayed at Emirates Stadium for a fifth year. Despite past injuries, the midfielder has started every Premier League match this season, underscoring Arteta’s continued trust in his abilities.

Mikel Arteta said, “Very important as he is a massive player for us. He has shown that for us week in, week out. He has started the season really well. The way he came back post-holidays it was probably the best condition he has been in so that was really helpful.”

Arteta elaborated on Partey’s need to adapt and his commendable work ethic, which has improved significantly. With Arsenal’s current midfield setup of Mikel Merino and Declan Rice in more advanced roles, Partey, alongside Jorginho, is positioned in a holding midfield role. Jorginho’s contract also expires in 2025 after a recent extension, prompting crucial decisions ahead for Arteta and Edu, the club’s technical director.

Mikel Arteta said, “Now he needs to continue to adapt. We have managed certain minutes of him and he is doing everything he can to be in the best physical condition. It is about consistency. Obviously, when you change certain habits, things don’t happen overnight.”

Given Arteta’s praise, there is speculation that the club might consider offering Partey a short-term contract extension. Edu, who has successfully secured new contracts for key players like Ben White, may focus next on convincing Partey to stay. With seven months left on his current deal, Arsenal might need to act swiftly to avoid Partey negotiating a pre-contract with other clubs in January.

Mikel Arteta said, “If it doesn’t happen in two or three weeks and you throw in the towel, you waste the next two or three years of your career. He is doing everything to adapt and his work ethic has been better than ever. Defensively he has been really solid and with the ball he had moments.”
