Context: Joleon Lescott’s Childhood Accident
Joleon Lescott recently shared the traumatic story of a childhood accident that left him with distinctive scars on his forehead. The former Everton and Manchester City star opened up about the incident during an appearance on The Rest is Football podcast, hosted by Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, and Micah Richards. Lescott recounted the event, which took place when he was just five years old and involved being struck by a car after leaving school.
Quote from Joleon Lescott:
“She [my mother] stepped out, I stepped out, she recognised the car wasn’t stopping so she stepped back. But I was already out on the road and literally my mum was on the opposite watching.”
Context: Impact of the Accident
The accident had lasting physical consequences for Lescott, who had multiple operations, the last one taking place when he was 15. However, Lescott doesn’t dwell on how the scars affected his sporting career, particularly because the incident remains a difficult memory for his parents.
Quote from Lescott on the Long-Term Impact:
“I was in and out of hospital, my last operation [was when] I was 15.”
When asked whether the scars affected his career, Lescott added:
“I don’t know to be honest, it’s not something I tend to dwell on that aspect of it because it’s upsetting [to my] parents. But in regards to the impact physically, no.”
Anecdote from Lescott on the Incident:
Lescott also recalled a moment when his mother told him about another child who had been injured by a van’s wing mirror:
“When I asked my mum, ‘what’s the story there,’ he got hit by a wing mirror, like a van was going on the curb and a wing mirror hit him and gave him brain damage.”
He humorously contrasted the situation with his own:
“He had the smallest scar and I’m there with bandages everywhere, blood, scars, and stitches, and I’m like, ‘I’m okay.’”
