Cantona Put Ex-Manager Wilkinson to Sword Over Rumours over his Exit from Leeds
Eric Cantona took a verbal swipe at Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson. Cantona, who was set for his Manchester United debut against Benfica in Lisbon that night, angrily denied that problems with Leeds were behind his £1.2 million moves to Old Trafford. He accused Leeds boss Wilkinson of spreading rumors about his supposed disenchantment to protect himself from fans angry that such a popular player had been allowed to leave. “He accuses me now. But you only have to look at my performances for Leeds to be convinced I was worth my place. Eight goals and eight decisive passes – I was a hit with everyone. I had become a leader. Everything was fine and if there hadn’t been this offer from Manchester, I would have stayed.” Cantona said.

Palace Chairman Denied Rift With Manager Steve Coppell
Crystal Palace chairman Ron Noades dismissed speculation that manager Steve Coppell was set to join first division Sunderland. The Selhurst Park supremo also denied that there was a growing rift between himself and 37-year-old former England star, who he had appointed eight years ago. As struggling Palace prepared for Coca Cola cup return to Liverpool where they were thrashed 5-0 in the premier league a week ago, Noades added, “I do not see that a change of managership, would be of any benefit to Crystal Palace.” He added “Steve was asked two weeks ago whether he was interested in the Sunderland position and he has informed me of this approach. But I have no need to respond to press comment regarding Sunderland because Steve’s circumstances would not take a position in the NorthEast a possibility, even if he had a desire to leave Crystal Palace.”

Arsenal’s Top Guns on Trial After Firing Blanks Lately
Arsenal’s misfiring front-men were set to go on a trial at Highbury in that night’s Coca Cola Cup third-round replay against Derby. Ian Wright, Paul Merson, and Anders Limpar, international stars worth a conservative £10 million between them on the transfer market, had upset manager George Graham with poor performances in Gunners’ previous two league games against Leeds and Manchester United. Graham said “We’ve got to get back to what we were doing before when he had a ten-match unbeaten run. It is all about consistency but you only achieve that with hard work.”

Lee Power was in Newcastle United’s Radar to boost their bid to reach Premier League
Championship club Newcastle United was planning to raid Premier league to add firepower to their team and sign a top-quality striker to boost their chances to make it to the premier league in the following season. Kevin Keegan, the Newcastle boss has put in a bold bid for Manchester United striker Mark Hughes which was immediately rejected by Alex Ferguson. Now the Tyneside outfit had turned their attention to Norwich City and the Republic of Ireland under 21 star Lee Power. Even though the Canaries would hold off any such attempts as they were top of the league and would need all their top players if they wanted to win the first-ever premier league.
