Alex Ferguson Shocks English Football with a £1.2 million Swoop of Leeds Star Eric Cantona
Alex Ferguson stunned English football with a remarkable £1.2 million move for arch-rival Leed’s United’s French Striker Eric Cantona. The talismanic but controversial forward was a pivotal part of Leed’s title triumph in 1991 and frequently found himself on the bench despite having scored 11 goals in 19 matches that season. The 26-year-old had a reputation of being too hot to handle a character with Auxerre, Bordeaux, Montpellier, Marseille and Nimes. He also originally went to Sheffield Wednesday but was unhappy about being put on trial there and decided to sign for Leeds United. He also rejected French football following a sending off and a two-month suspension after insulting a disciplinary panel.
Alex Ferguson tried to sign David Hirst from Sheffield Wednesday for £3.5 million but had to turn elsewhere once that deal became impossible to pull off. Lack of goals had put Manchester United out of the European Cup and Coca Cola cup and their bid to end the 26-year-old title drought was in tatters due to a string of poor performances. Ferguson hoped that Cantona could provide his team with vital goals they badly needed.

Struggling Crystal Palace hoped to turn around their fortunes with a trip to Anfield
Crystal Palace was going into their next Premier League match against Liverpool in 21st position in the table with only 12 points from the first 16 matches. They had finished third in 1991 but everything had gone downhill for them since then. They were facing Liverpool away at Anfield who was 11th in the table. Chris Armstrong was a key player for Palace who had been considered to be the bargain of the season following his £1 million moves from Millwall. He heralded his arrival with a string of goals and had scored the goal to give them a point a week earlier against Nottingham Forest.

Draw Specialist Ipswich Town to take on Everton Looking to Continue their impressive campaign
Liverpool’s Mersey side neighbours Everton faced Ipswich away in what was a battle of 10th v 18th. Ipswich was called the draw specialists that season with them drawing 10 out of 16 league games that season. They were accused of negative tactics where they used John Wark as a sweeper behind a defensive back four. But being the newcomers in the league their priority was to stay up that season and they were doing very well in the table. The main player for them was Jason Dozzell, the stylish forward who had played over 300 matches for Ipswich after making his debut as a 16-year-old.

Manchester City forced to make the first change in six matches as David Brightwell replaced his older brother Ian Brightwell
Manchester City was set to face Tottenham Hotspur at Maine Road and an injury to Ian Brightwell was to force them to make their first change in six matches. City had found consistency with a settled line up and that had shown into their form as they had started to climb the league table. But a badly gashed chin meant that they had to change their lineup following their win at Coventry a week earlier and draft in Ian Brightwell’s younger brother David.
