Jannik Vestergaard is backing himself to win over the new Leicester City manager just as he did with Enzo Maresca. Vestergaard has signed a new three-year deal at the King Power Stadium after an excellent season in the Championship. Twelve months ago, the Dane looked destined to leave after a torrid two years at the club, but his career completely turned around after Maresca came in. With his passing abilities and understanding of the gameplan, Vestergaard convinced Maresca he was the best option to start at the heart of the defence. Now, amid competition from Wout Faes, Conor Coady, Harry Souttar and Ben Nelson, the 31-year-old must do the same under City’s new manager.
Jannik Vestergaard said “I could have waited for a new coach, but on the other hand, you can say that the club can now find a coach that suits the players and types that are in the squad, Regardless of who becomes coach, there is never a guarantee that I will get playing time. I can only do my best. I did that when Enzo Maresca joined and it went well, so I trust that the same thing will happen again. I am sure that the club will make a wise and ambitious choice of coach.”
Vestergaard is excited to return to the Premier League and to test himself against the best opponents. He has plenty of experience in the English top flight, but most of that came with Southampton, with the centre-back making only 10 Premier League appearances for City across two years.
Jannik Vestergaard said “It will be great to play in the Premier League again,” he added. “It has been a fun and good year with many exciting matches and full stadiums, but as a player you always want to reach the highest possible level and meet the very best players. So it was important that an eventful season also culminated in promotion. There are many good things going on in Leicester, and I would like to remain a part of that.”
