Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has reluctantly accepted Bernardo Silva’s one-match ban for a tweet comparing teammate Benjamin Mendy to a black cartoon character but the Manchester City manager again insisted that his player was not racist.

Pep Guardiola said “In this situation, the less important thing is the fact that we are going to miss him. He has been accused of something he’s not. If they want to pick on someone to show something, it was the right person. He will be careful with social media from now on, but if this can help make a better society, I’m pretty sure Bernardo will accept this punishment. But he is not what he is accused of being. We spoke many times about what happened in stadiums, regarding Bernardo I was incredibly clear. If the people believe Bernardo is this type of person they are completely wrong. They judge one joke, I judge three years with him.Bernardo, or anyone else in my squad, do this thing for a joke. Benjamin is like a brother to Bernardo, that is what I see every single day here. ”

Premier League this season has come down heavy on any signs of racism in its football. Unfortunately, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Tammy Abraham and Kurt Zouma have all been among the players who have been racially abused online this season despite all measures. Other footballers to have received abuse are Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling, who has regularly spoken out about the hateful comments he receives on social media, and West Ham midfielder Declan Rice. The Premier League, Football League and FA all attended a meeting with Twitter in London on Friday and said conversations were “positive and productive”. In a joint statement, the three football bodies said: “The Premier League, EFL and FA today met Twitter with respect to the ongoing concerns surrounding discriminatory and hateful conduct taking place on the platform.

With all above context, any premier league player found posting a racist or even near racist abuse can expect a heavy hand  from the league officials.

Jurgen Klopp said  “How important is the mental side in football? It’s all, if you like. You can have the best technical ability but if you aren’t ready to show it then you can’t make the best of it.It’s no different in football than it is in normal life. The first step to achieve whatever you achieve is to think you can do it. You want to do it, you want to achieve it then you have to find a way to go there. If you fail at something then you need to convince yourself ‘I can do it’. You have to at least see the chance that it can work out. That’s what the boys have worked for over the past four years. Everything is different now.”

Since July, Liverpool stars have been working with sports psychologist Lee Richardson, who has his own office at Melwood where he’s based for three days each week. The Reds boss knows his side will face more difficult times in their quest for the title, despite enjoying an eight point lead at the top of the table. More scrutiny has come in focus after Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino was sacked this week. It is widely held that Pochettino’s Spurs team simply failed to deal with the crushing blow of losing the Champions’ League final and their form this season shattered as a result. Klopp must be wary that missing on premier league by a point was somewhat compensated by winning the champions league last season. However, if the team fails yet again to win premier league title now, he may suffer the same fate as Pochettino.

Regular Magpies skipper Jamaal Lascelles has been ruled out until the new year with a fractured tibia, meaning Bruce not only has to choose a replacement at centre-half but a new on-field leader too.Steve Bruce admitted considering Jonjo Shelvey as captain but knows that Shelvey suffers from a “perception” issue.

Steve Bruce said ” I’ve got another decision to make… (Shelvey) seems to be the normal one, to put it on him, and I’ve got no problem with that. He’s got this perception about him that he doesn’t care… that’s wrong. He’s a good pro, he’s a good lad, and he’s popular. He trains well and I’ve got no problem. If it seems to be that I won’t upset that (with the captaincy), then we’ll give it to him. I think Jonjo carried an injury for a while and tried to just play through it and play with it and I think that’s hampered him for a while. His physicality was terrific in the last two games and this perception that he can’t run is not right. I think he’s fit and now he’s got to hit those levels. If he hits those levels with me then he’ll be fine because we all know the ability he’s got, it’s the other side which you know he has to do and he’s done it.”

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is a player that has certainly attracted plenty of attention throughout his relatively short professional career. Shelvey got the first big move of his career when Liverpool snapped up the then-teen sensation from Charlton. However he was surprisingly sold when it got highlighted that Jonjo was someone who could overstep the mark from time to time in training at Liverpool. Shelvey had to deal with his anger issues as well as go to a psychologist for dealing with it. He had also been considered a  sulker and having a bad attitude.
