The remarkable story of Clive Baker was one of the most amazing stories of that season. Earlier that summer it looked like that the 33-year-old journeyman goalkeeper was on the verge of hanging up his boots. He was released by Coventry as a free transfer after him playing for their reserves for the previous season. But his life took a new turn after then Ipswich Town’s assistant manager and former midfielder Charlie Woods asked Baker to be a backup goalkeeper for Craig Forest. Who first got sent off against Sheffield United and then injured himself playing in the world cup. Baker was drafted into the side and hadn’t looked back since then. Ipswich had only lost one match out of the five that Baker had played in and was likely to be kept on as the first-choice goalkeeper when Forest would eventually return.

Ron Atkinson landed a Barclays bonus before facing Manchester United at Villa Park – the manager of the month award for October. Atkinson’s Aston Villa was unbeaten in 11 matches, eight of them in the FA Premier League, and previous week they knocked holders United from Coca-Cola cup. It was a dramatic change of fortunes for Villa, who collected only three points from their first four matches.

Bryan Robson was set to lock horns with his old buddy Paul McGrath at Villa Park after “feeling as good as new”. The 35-year-old former England captain was set to make his first start of the season for Manchester United after a hamstring injury – on the sixth anniversary of manager Alex Ferguson’s arrival at Old Trafford. Facing him was McGrath and Ron Atkinson, the manager that United sacked and the one who brought Robson to Old Trafford for a then-record £1.5 million fee in October 1987.

Meanwhile, leaders Blackburn Rovers were taking on Tottenham at Ewood Park with speculation that Kenny Dalglish was about to offer troubled Nottingham Forest £5 million for Roy Keane. Though the news was quickly dismissed by Forest manager Brian Clough saying that Forest already had enough money in the bank to buy players if and when he decided and he would no way approve a sale of one of his most prized assets which could spark fury amongst their supporters as the club battled to avoid relegation.
