Blackburn Rovers 1 – Arsenal 1 – Kevin Campbell rescued a point for Gunners against Kenny Dalglish’s Blackburn
Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell fired a 74th-minute equalizer to earn the Gunners a share of the premiership points against Kenny Dalglish’s Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. The eagerly awaited contest between England strikers Alan Shearer and Ian Wright never quite materialized mainly because the Blackburn star started on the bench.
Blackburn had the better of the start as Kevin Gallacher could have had a hat trick before he opened the scoring in the 37th minute. After a few missed chances he finally struck with a well-taken goal when Mike Newell turned Tony Adams down the right and sent it inside for Gallacher to help the ball home from 10 yards.
For the equaliser, Campbell latched on to Martin Keown’s long pass, left Blackburn defenders Kevin Moran and David May in his wake before slotting the ball calmly past keeper Bobby Mimms to cancel out Blackburn’s goal.
The moment that all the Blackburn fans were waiting for came in the 53rd minute when Shearer came on and he did his best to pep up the Blackburn attack but it was Wright who almost struck in the 70th minute, although his shot was blocked by Mimms.
