Wednesday’s papers in the UK covered the news of Chelsea’s upcoming match against Crystal Palace, judgment day for Wimbledon’s Vinnie Jones over Football’s Hard men controversy, Southampton winger David Lee leaving on a loan as well as growing pressure on Howard Kendall to drop the undroppable from the team.

Chelsea boss Ian Porterfield’s new safety-first policy was already paying dividends and he had the luxury of choosing from an unchanged squad for their upcoming home match with Crystal Palace. Porterfield announced a few days earlier that he had advised the players on how they can avoid mistakes in training that can lead to knocks. Chelsea was hoping that the Palace game can signal the start of another winning sequence, although Porterfield felt that too many home games could have a negative effect, “When you play away from home you can sit back a little bit and catch teams on the break. It’s a little bit harder with consecutive games at home.”

Wimbledon’s controversial star Vinny Jones had been ordered to appear in front of an English FA disciplinary commission at Lancaster Gate two weeks later. The Wimbledon midfielder must answer a misconduct charge after his involvement in the controversial video “Soccer’s Hard Men”. Jones could expect a hefty fine and possibly a ban for his role in promoting the video, which glorified cheating and violence in football.

Southampton winger David Lee, signed just 14 months ago from Bury for £350000, had joined Bolton on a month’s loan. A permanent move was likely to be followed. The tricky wide forward had never fully settled into the squad and life on the south coast and preferred life in the North West of England.

Everton fans urged the manager Howard Kendall to not pick players on the basis of the reputation and drop the likes of Paul Rideout, Tony Cottee and Johnson who had all been below par that season. They wanted to see youngster Stuart Barlow upfront. Everton had lost to Manchester City a few days ago but Barlow was one of the bright sparks from that game.
