Unai Emery says Jhon Duran must remain humble to continue improving under him at Aston Villa after the Colombia international scored his first goal for the club in the 4-0 win over Everton. He returned to training at Bodymoor Heath in midweek ahead of the clash against Everton, and one minute after being introduced from off the bench in 74th minute, he pounced on the ball in the final third after a throw-in from Ashley Young, and finished past Jordan Pickford to score Villa’s fourth goal of the afternoon.
Unai Emery said: “It was his first goal with us, and after six months I think it’s good. I think he has to feel good in the squad, with the team and with his teammates. How we’re playing, we want to add him trying to support, trying to demand of him more and more. Today he responded with a very good goal, but there is still a lot of work to do with him. He has to be our striker with Ollie Watkins and we have to be competitive with those players. Today, his impact was very brilliant. He was injured and it really was impossible to play in pre-season, but today he had 20 minutes, he scored. Last year he didn’t score, but we have to protect him, we have to support him, teach him. He has to be humble to learn as soon as possible and to take the possibility to play, to compete for us, and with Ollie Watkins, our scorers because we need it.”
