In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are reviving some of the moments from past which will restore golden history of the best league in the world.
Tuesday papers in the UK covered the goalless draw between Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa played on the previous day, Liverpool became the first side to earn a guaranteed £1 million under the new BSkyB deal, Howard Kendall concerned about lack of goals from his side and Ian Rush praised the Anfield faithful after achieving the club record goal scoring feat.
Alan Shearer drew another blank as Blackburn missed an opportunity to go back on top of the Premier League at Villa Park the previous night. Shearer squandered a couple of regulation chances to put his team in front and Paul Mcgrath and Shaune Teale ensured Blackburn was limited to those Shearer only. The only big chance in the game fell to Mike Newell where his shot was superbly saved by the diving Nigel Spink.
Liverpool was the first club to be guaranteed a £1 million payout that year from the FA Premier league’s BSkyB pot. All 22 teams in the new set up had already received £650000 and they collected an additional £69335 for each live outing. Liverpool’s appearance against Manchester United at the Old Trafford was their third showing so far that season. BSkyB had earmarked Liverpool for further coverage against Queens Park Rangers, Everton, and Oldham before the year ended. That would push the Merseysiders cash haul into seven figures with the promise of plenty more money to come from the £304 million five year deal.
Everton manager Howard Kendall said he was concerned about the lack of goals in the team and he would not hesitate to dip into the transfer market to give Everton a much-needed boost. The Goodison boss had been frustrated by his side’s inability to cash in on a succession of good performances. The Blues were creating the chances but struggled all season to kill opponents off. HE said “It does give me a cause for concern. Its something we are looking at and something must resolve. We are not finishing off the good work up to the box.” Toffees were set to face Arsenal in their next league match.
Liverpool’s new record goalscorer Ian Rush paid tribute to the people who helped him reach his record haul – the fans. Liverpool’s ace marksman whose goal at Old Trafford on Sunday beat Roger Hunt’s club tally of 286, insisted that the backing from the Reds’ faithful had been a regular source of inspiration during his 11 scoring seasons at Anfield.
