Eddie Howe admits he’d love to add a Casemiro-style signing to his ranks this summer with Newcastle United – but knows such a marquee addition will come at a premium.
Eyebrows were raised by some observers when Manchester United paid £70million for the midfielder who turned 31 last month. But his experience during the Carabao Cup final arguably swung the balance on the day at Wembley.
Casemiro will be absent at St James’ Park for an encounter that will be watched by a global audience and Howe’s side must try to take full advantage.
When asked if he’d love to bring in a player such as Casemiro,
Eddie Howe said: “I think experience is a really valuable tool. One of the beauties of our team this season is that we’ve had players with a mixture of experience and youth. That mix has been really important. Certainly having people who are used to winning and having the mentality to go with it are worth their weight in gold.”
Whether Howe’s board can deliver him a star like the former Real Madrid and FC Porto ace this summer remains to be seen. And with financial fair play a big factor, Howe knows there will be restrictions.
Eddie Howe added: “It’s a difficult one because usually with that experience and that mentality comes a price tag. That is the balance that we’ve got to try to find.”
The clash against Man United is a rerun of the Carabao Cup final just 35 days after the Wembley showpiece. Howe admits there have been multiple reviews of the game.
Eddie howe said: “We’ve re-watched the game in preparation for this game. It was so recent it can give us some idea of what we need to improve on and what we need to do better.”
During his press conference, Howe was also asked if he watched the Red Devils lift the trophy at Wembley in order to gain motivation for future successes with Newcastle.
Eddie Howe said: “I was actually going around doing interviews so I didn’t them go up and get the trophy.”
