Wanya Marcal-Madivadua could be promoted to the Leicester City first team to help solve the shortage of wingers. The 20-year-old Portuguese youth international has been named by Brendan Rodgers as someone who has impressed, and who could be an option on the wing over the second half of the season. It is a position where City are short after the transfer window. While Tete arrived, Ayoze Perez and Marc Albrighton left and Jack Harrison’s last-minute move fell through. That leaves just two established wide players in Tete and Harvey Barnes. Rodgers has said that Dennis Praet is an option, along with James Maddison, but that he could also turn to Marcal-Madivadua. He made his senior debut in the FA Cup win over Watford a year ago, and has been one of the development squad’s most impressive performers, either as a winger, wing-back, or attacking midfielder.

Brendan Rodgers said: “We had a really positive window. We tried to get another player in who could really help us and provide competition. It didn’t quite materialise. Marc, I made a promise to, that he could go. We have options. Dennis Praet has played there, James has played there. We’re going to have players coming back. And I’ve been really impressed with young Wanya, who’s been playing with the Under-21 team. He’s been doing really well and has trained well with us. He’s an out-and-out winger as well who can play there. He’s shown up very well in training. I also look within. I’m confident we have the squad we want, even though we tried to do more business. I’m still happy with what we did.”

Marcal-Madivadua missed a chunk of this season with injury but returned last month and scored in the loss at Arsenal. Last term, he was the club’s second highest scorer in Premier League 2, behind only striker Tawanda Maswanhise.
