In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are going to revive some of the moments from past which will revive moments of the golden history of the league.
Friday’s papers looked ahead to the upcoming weekend fixtures in the Premier League where Coventry’s Robert Rosario was racing against time to be fit for their match against leaders Norwich City, Graeme Souness still saw some positives in the Reds’ recent performances and hoped for a better result at the weekend, Leeds United surprised everyone by naming Eric Cantona in his squad for the match against Everton meanwhile the toffees were struggling with injuries and brought back Robert Warzycha to the team hoping for a turnaround in the fortunes.
Coventry striker Robert Rosario was winning his fitness battle to face former club Norwich City in the next day’s Premier League leadership battle. Rosario was left out of the Coca-Cola cup match against Scarborough tills week after aggravating a back injury against Nottingham Forest on Monday but had resumed training. The striker, who cost Coventry £600,000 18 months ago, was expected to return for the game against Norwich City.
Graeme Souness told his players to stand up and be counted. The Liverpool boss knew that victory over Wimbledon would not only stem the tide of criticism towards him and his team, it would also serve as a massive confidence booster after previous Tuesday’s 4-4 draw with Chesterfield. Despite previous Saturday’s 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa and shock midweek result, Souness saw enough positive aspects of the Reds’ play to approach what was a crucial match without too much concern. He said: “People may laugh, but I felt that in the first half at Aston Villa and in the game the other night, we played some really good football. “It was only when we were near our own box against Chesterfield that we played like a pub team. “The attitude we showed to come back was tremendous, and we have to show that again tomorrow.”
Leeds United manager Howard Wilkinson pulled a surprise when he named French ace Eric Cantona in his squad for the next day’s Elland Road clash with Everton. The big striker was due to give a fitness test in the morning, but there was every chance he could be involved in some capacity. Cantons sustained a hamstring injury two weeks earlier, playing in the European Cup against Stuttgart. Wilkinson ruled him out for six to eight weeks at that time, but the Frenchman had made surprisingly rapid progress on the comeback trail.

Everton, on the other hand, faced a tough test against the Champions Leeds United as they strive to get back on the rails after losing to Rotherham. Robert Warzycha was drafted straight into the side after returning from international duty with Poland and Yugoslav midfielder Preki was to make his Premier League debut. Manager Howard Kendall said: “Preki is looking forward to the game. It’s a big stage, but he is used to the limelight, having been one of the stars of the American Indoor League. I’m sure he will do a good job for us. These are always tough games, but Leeds have had a fairly indifferent start. We were unfortunate to lose there last year and will be looking to bounce back tomorrow.”
