Julen Lopetegui says he is “sad and frustrated” after Wolves exited the FA Cup at the hands of Liverpool. The replay which many believe shouldn’t have been needed went in Liverpool’s favour courtesy of Harvey Elliott’s first-half strike. Wolves have now been dumped out of both domestic cup competitions in the space of a week. Lopetegui referenced the VAR failure at Anfield which ruled Toti Gomes’ goal out 10 days ago in his post-match press conference.
Julien Lopetegui said: “I am sad and frustrated to not continue in the cup. Looking at the two matches we deserved more, but this is football. We scored more goals than the opponent in the first match. We have to play – all of you know why. It was a pity because we suffered a really strange goal in the first half. We played well in the first minutes, after the goal we suffered a lot. In my opinion we were out of the match in the first half. I wasn’t happy at half-time. We changed some things. In the second half I was happy with my players. They put it all in the pitch – personality, character. Unfortunately for us we didn’t score. It was a pity for our fans, above all, because we fight for them. Now we have to focus 100 percent on the Premier League. It’s the main aim for us. I hate to lose and today we lost, so today I am sad.”
