David Moyes has suggested that Manchester United have always had ‘different principles’ to other sides when it comes to developing and signing players at the club. Appearing on the Diary of a CEO podcast, Moyes was asked how United ‘get things back to how they were’ – and the West Ham boss was quick to joke that the Reds somehow need to get rid of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. The Scotsman also suggested that the Reds have always had ‘different principles’ to other clubs.
David Moyes said: “I think you’ll probably need get rid of Pep [Guardiola] somehow from Man City, that’s my way I look at it. I think Manchester United have different principles than most of the other clubs. They looked at their youth a lot, didn’t always sign maybe the top diamond, but always picked out players who improved. Now and again, they went and bought a Cantona every so often, or a Van Nistelrooy or Van Persie. At different times, they [United] bought really good players at good times. Manchester United had their own way, but because of the competition that came in from Manchester City, and probably Chelsea in the earlier years. It’s the expectation or the excitement of the new players coming in, I would really like football to be where money was not always going to be the key. I’d rather see sometimes that it’s not that way.”
United have not won a trophy since lifting the Europa League and EFL up in 2017, both of which came under Jose Mourinho. This season, the Reds currently sit fourth in the Premier League table, just one point behind second-placed Man City.
