Alexander Isak admits it was a bitter-sweet feeling after making his comeback on Saturday night – but knows he can help Newcastle United make history against Leicester City. After crashing out to Sheff Wed, the opportunity to make amends by reaching the semi-final of the League Cup by seeing off the Foxes is now in front of Eddie Howe and his players. Isak returned to the field for the first time since September at Hillsborough but indicated the comeback meant little in defeat.

Alexander Isak said: “The result takes away some of the positive things especially when you lose like this. But it was at least good for me to get minutes. It’s frustrating when you come to a new club and you can’t be on there with the lads. I think it helped a lot for me personally has done so well. They have won most of the games. That helps you and helps you focus on things.”

Isak’s injury lay off was meant to be a short-term issue and he was originally penned in for a return over in Saudi Arabia on the club’s pre-Christmas tour. But Howe did not take any risks on the £63million man.

Speaking about his injury,

Alexander Isak said: “I got injured with the national team, it was my thigh, as things can happen there were complications. I just did my best and tried the best possible to get back, now that I am back I am just happy and don’t want to focus too much on the injury. It was difficult (after scoring v Liverpool) on debut. But at the end of the day things can be out of your control, for me I just accepted the fact that was the case. I just tried to get back as quickly as possible. It wasn’t that quick but I am happy now. I was excited to be back and it was really nice to see all the fans travel. I was a bit gutted we couldn’t give them anything more. It’s really positive that we have another game and make it right for the fans.”

Regardless of the opponents Isak and his team-mates are keen to simply get the Sheff Wed game out of their system.

Alexander Isak said: “We are looking at the team you can see we want to bounce back from Sheff Wed and it’s positive we have the chance to do it so soon. I know that is the case and the gaffer said that too. You have to bounce back and it’s always good to get that early chance. You have seen the quality of this team when we do well. It’s one game at a time, we will see how well we do in each competition.”
