In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are going to revive some of the moments from past which will revive moments of the golden history of the league.
Tuesday’s papers covered premier league played on the previous night between Nottingham Forest and Coventry, Graeme Souness’s position under threat following a string of poor results, Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson hoping to see Bryan Robson back to full fitness and Robert Lee from Charlton chooses Newcastle United over Middlesborough at the last moment.

Nigel Clough rescued his father Brian from the public embarrassment of equalling Nottingham Forest’s worst ever run of defeats. Clough senior went into previous night’s City ground clash with Coventry in the full glare of the soccer world after six successive defeats his worst sequence in 25 years of management. Another reverse would have matched Forest’s all-time low of seven suffered in the 1971-72 season when they were relegated. Coventry even took the lead at the stroke of half time when Robert Rosario gave Coventry the lead before Clough Junior saved Nottingham Forest’s night.

Rumors were doing the rounds that Graeme Souness’ position as the manager of Liverpool was under threat following a string of poor results. Liverpool had only won two out of the nine games till then in the season and previous week’s defeat at the hands of Aston Villa where Dean Saunders, the ex Liverpool striker scored twice had mounted the pressure on the Reds’ boss even more. Saunders’ departure from the club was met with dissatisfaction from many supporters and him coming back to haunt Liverpool did not make anything easier for Souness. Kevin Keegan, the old Liverpool hero who then in charge of Newcastle in division one was the favorite to replace Souness. Newcastle at that time had made an impressive start to their campaign with unbeaten in the first seven matches in the season.
Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson was hoping that club captain Bryan Robson would be fit enough in time for the weekend’s clash against Middlesborough. Robson was due to make his long-awaited comeback for the reserves team against Rotherham a day ago but it had to be postponed. Ferguson said, “It’s a bit too early for Bryan to return. He will be training this week and, if all goes well, he will be able to have a game at the weekend.”

The saga of Robert Lee’s transfer ended with a dramatic surprise after he signed for Newcastle United after being in negotiations with Middlesborough for a very long period of time. Lee was set for a move to Middlesborough 48 hours ago after discussing the move at length with Borough manager Lennie Lawrence but at the last moment, he asked for 36 hours to consult his family before making a move up north which would see him relocate more than 250 miles. Now in a sudden turn of events, his transfer to Newcastle was announced earlier today.
