Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz insists he is ‘so happy’ to be playing under Unai Emery. The Villa head coach has taken nine points from his first four Premier League matches in charge of the club after he replaced Steven Gerrard in November. The Liverpool legend was sacked following the club’s poor start to the season, but under Emery, Villa have proven their credentials to at least compete for a place in the top half come May. After the 2-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, Villa face another tough test against a Wolves side scrapping for points under Julen Lopetegui on Wednesday.
Douglas Luis said: “It’s a hard game against a good team with good players. It’s so special for us [playing at Villa Park], the fans help us so, so much to win. I’m so happy with the result (vs Tottenham) because we played a very good game and we were so comfortable on the pitch. We need to forget it because the game has passed now. We have a big game tomorrow and we need to concentrate on this game.”
Luiz has been an ever-present in Emery’s first XI and is developing a strong bond with midfield partner Boubacar Kamara. The duo have featured from the start of Villa’s last three matches, against Brighton, Liverpool and Spurs.
Douglas Luiz added: “I’m enjoying it so much because we’re staying on the ball, being calm and making more passes. We enjoy the game when we have the ball. I’m so happy because we’re comfortable and confident. I like Bouba because he’s such a good player and he’s helping me so much. I enjoy playing with him. He’s such a good player. He’s a young player with a big future.”
