Jurgen Klopp is hopeful of having both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson available for Thursday’s trip to Manchester City. Van Dijk, meanwhile, was knocked out the previous night when he captained the Netherlands to a 2-2 draw against Argentina before losing on penalties. Klopp has afforded all of his World Cup contingent a week off after their respective exits in Qatar but he has hinted that both captain Henderson and Alexander-Arnold could feature in the fourth round of the competition Liverpool won for a record ninth time at the end of February.

Jurgen Klopp said: “Yeah, there’s a chance, of course – they train already. Hendo is already training here. Virg is training here but I don’t think we will try that. Hendo we will see, Trent we will see. But this group [has] worked now together for nearly two weeks and we made a real step and that’s cool. I don’t know at this moment. I hope we all get through it and we all know in England, and in Europe in general, there’s kind of a virus going around, so we hope we can stay out of that. Then we will make the decision obviously on Wednesday who can play on Thursday. But it’s good and will be a very interesting game after that period but I’m looking forward to it.”

Mohamed Salah gave the Reds an early lead against Milan after good work from Joel Matip before the Italians responded through Alexis Saelemaekers. Thiago’s Alcantara’s well-struck effort regained the lead for Liverpool before substitute Darwin Nunez struck a brace. A post-match penalty shootout – as per the rules of the ‘Dubai Super Cup’ – saw Milan win 4-3.
