Chelsea 2 Norwich 3

Not for the first time that season Chelsea failed to take advantage of a lead, and having led 2-0 went down by the odd goal in five to a fighting Norwich side who deserved to stay top of the table. They were at top of the new league with five wins from their first seven games before that day.

Man City 0 Middleborough 1

Gary Flitcroft had a full home debut to forget. The 19 year old Bolton born player put through his own goal in the 42nd minute and it proved to be the only goal of the game. That just about summed up City’s ill luck because they had more of the play. The visitors had now beat City four times that year.

Two goal Chris Armstrong became an instant hit with Palace fans on his home debut.

Sheffield United 1 Liverpool 0

Sheffield United manager Dave Bassett believed he had snapped up a bargain in Walsall reject Adrian Littlejohn, whose goal beat Liverpool. Bassett said: “When he was released, he gave me a ring and we took him on loan. Then we gave him another two months and he developed well. We signed him on a two-year contract in the summer and he’s doing well. “ Littlejohn, playing only his second game of the season, kept his head before slotting home the winner to give United their first win in six games.

Southampton 1 Queens Park Rangers 2

QPR ended their slump with a convincing second-half performance, which condemned struggling Saints to their home defeat of the Season. Rangers were second best in the first half but all Southampton had to show for their dominance was a goal after 12 minutes from Matthew Le Tissier. Rangers went ahead when Les Ferdinand centered from the left and Justin Channing prodded in the winner from 10 yards.

No Crisis at Tottenham

Tottenham assistant manager Ray Clemence denied rumours that out-of-favour Erik Thorstvedt was seeking crisis talks about his future with the club. The Norwegian played for Spurs reserves against Sutton United recently but Clemence said: “He hasn’t been to see us about anything. The first I heard about it was in the papers this morning”.
