In a big upset, Robbie Earle’s 87th minute winner gave Wimbledon their first victory  of the season in a dramatic Selhurst Park finale , against Premier League favorites s Arsenal. There were three goals in the last nine minutes after the teams finished a dismal first-half level at 1-1. Joe Kinnear, Wimbledon’s Dublin born manager, has waited a long time for their first victory of the season and the three points that dragged them off the bottom of the inaugural Premier League table. His advice to adopt an Irish approach and the return to form of long ball expert John Fashanu brought about a result that few outside Wimbledon Common could have foreseen. The team that gave English football the direct route forward did it again with a thoroughly merited victory against an Arsenal side hotly tipped to win the Premier League. Win summed up an afternoon of long ball joy for Kinnear who said: “The dressing room is buzzing again and the old crazy gang spirit is back. We had a go, as Wimbledon always do, and we won. That’s the way forward for us.”

High flying Norwich City left it late and only in the 88th minute did the game spark into life when substitute Mark Robins broke the deadlock. For Robins, who was a first half substitute for injured skipper lan Butterworth, it was his fourth goal in five games since his 800.000 move from Manchester United in the close season. For the rest of the match though, a disappointing crowd of just over 12,000 watched the League leaders struggle badly against a side which was quicker to the ball in midfield and sharper up front.

In another non match headline, wonder winger Ryan Giggs was granted a licence to thrill by Alex Ferguson for upcoming game against champions Leeds United visit to Old Trafford for a TV showdown. Giggs, fresh and mature, has been in brilliant form that season, keeping pace with claims that he could become another George Best. The United manager said: “Ryan’s being man-marked by opponents now which is a great testimony to the bob. “He is being given special attention and that is part of the growing -up process. With Leeds conceding ten goals in six games and scoring 13, it could be a goals galore feast for the cameras. But Ferguson warned Leeds whose Frenchman Eric Cantona has already scored two hat-tricks: “My feeling is that it may only take a goal to win the points on Sunday, but who knows? “We have tightened up and not let any goals in in the last three games.
