Steven Gerrard insists he will ‘never, ever quit’ after his Aston Villa side were beaten 3-0 by Fulham on Thursday evening. Despite having the likes of Phillipe Coutinho, Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings at his disposal, Villa have scored just once in four matches and afterwards the Villa boss cut a dejected figure.

Steven Gerrard said: “The performance was nowhere near good enough. The first half shocked me, particularly after the weekend (when Villa played well in losing 2-0 at home to Chelsea). I’ll try and find the answers but I won’t disrespect my players. We were excellent at the weekend but it’s very difficult to praise them after tonight.”

The away end at Craven Cottage spent much of the second half expressing their frustration at Gerrard, with audible boos at half-time and full-time as well as chants – from Fulham and Villa fans – that he will be ‘sacked in the morning’. The Anfield legend admitted that it was tough to hear that from his own supporters, but he remains determined to fight on until told otherwise.

Steven Gerrard said: “It’s tough but I’m a man and I accept it and I feel their frustration. It was a tough night for me personally. We’ll see what happens. I understand the situation we’re in. I’m a fighter and I will never, ever quit anything, certainly when it comes to football, so we’ll see what happens.”
