West Ham United manager David Moyes has confirmed that winger Maxwel Cornet will miss the Europa Conference League clash on Thursday night against Anderlecht in Belgium. Moyes has revealed that Cornet has not linked up with the squad in Belgium but is hopeful that the former Burnley man’s lay-off is not a serious one.
David Moyes said: “Maxwel Cornet hasn’t travelled. He’s got a little bit of a calf strain. We don’t know how long it will keep him out at the moment, but we don’t think it’s too severe.”
In Wednesday’s open training session, 17-year-old left-back Regan Clayton trained with the Hammers, just hours after featuring for the under-21s as a substitute in a Papa John’s Trophy defeat to Milton Keynes Dons. While Clayton is not in the squad in Belgium, Moyes has said that 16-year-old midfielder Oliver Scarles is in the squad for tomorrow’s game.
David Moyes said: “We’ve brought Ollie Scarleswith us, who’s 16. Anderlecht have got a couple of 16-year-olds, so it’s a great thing that young players can opportunities, and some of them will play. We used a lot last year. We’ve got a new group of under-23s, and we’re trying to promote the younger ones even sooner and quicker if we think they’re doing well.”
