Long-serving Leicester City winger Marc Albrighton has been named the club’s new vice-captain in a collective decision among staff and players.
Brendan Rodgers said: “Marc Albrighton was the choice from the coaches and the fellow players. It was unanimous really. He typifies everything you want from a modern player. The squad have got two fantastic professionals that set a standard every day in Jonny and Marc. Their experiences and the level of how they commit themselves every day to their work, they’ll provide a great inspiration and a real source of comfort for the other players, who know they are there to look after them and support them.”
Albrighton is no longer a regular at City – he started just 11 Premier League games last season and has been an unused substitute in both matches so far this term – but his contributions off the pitch will be “invaluable”, Rodgers has said. Wes Morgan and Christian Fuchs used to play similar roles, but have since left the club.
Brendan Rodgers said: “He’s absolutely brilliant. I’ve had a few of those players here now that have been great players, who are maybe not playing so much, but are really important figures for us outside the field. Marc, whenever he’s asked to contribute and play, he always gives absolutely everything to the cause. He still fights and shows every day in training that he wants to play. I can’t speak highly enough of him. He’s a great guy who’s got the total respect of his team-mates and the total respect of all the coaches. Whether he starts or whether he’s on the bench, his contributions are always invaluable here.”
