Chelsea decided to not extend stand-in manager Dave Webb’s contract after finishing the season in 11th place. Webb had taken over from Ian Porterfield after the club went through two months without a win and were in the relegation zone.
Chelsea had won five, drew four and lost four of his 13 games in charge and the club acknowledged the fact that Webb had done a good job.
Chelsea football club said “We wish to record our sincere thanks to David for his work since he took over as team manager in February when the club was struggling and 12 games without a win.”
Swindon Town boss Glenn Hoddle was favourite for the job but Swindon was involved in a playoff to get promoted to the premier league and no decision was imminent on the appointment.
